It took the West Kelowna D-Backs just five innings on Wednesday to confirm their standing as the top B.C. Midget AAA Baseball League in the Central Okanagan.

Sitting in sixth place in the 15-team provincial loop going into last night’s game with the across-the-lake-rival Kelowna Cubs, the host D-Backs defeated the visitors 11-0 to improve to 17-9, while dropping the newly-formed Kelowna squad to a 12th-place 7-16.

The D-Backs’ Nate Hettinga solidified his position as the West Kelowna ace, scattering four Kelowna hits and striking out four Cubs in his five innings of work.

With a fastball consistently in the upper 70s, mixed with a change-up eight to 10 mph slower, Hettinga was able to keep the Cubs batters off balance on the way to his fourth win in seven starts this season. He leads the team in innings pitched and strikeouts, while sporting a 2.90 earned run average.

Meanwhile, Hettinga received plenty of support from his teammates, including Jeff Schlenker, Carter Martens and Nic Ostrom, all of whom connected for a pair of singles. Ben Dojohn, Ty Loeppky, Brendan Martel and Martens drove in runs each and Micheal Gini scored three times.

The Cubs’ Keaton Meier managed a double off Hettinga, while singles came from Taylor deGruchy, Kurtis Wall and Keyshon Jackson.

Action resumes for both teams on Saturday when the Cubs are in Port Moody to take on the Tri City Indians for a doubleheader and the D-Backs are in Ridge Meadows for a twinbill.
